Funkwerk Enterprise Communications GmbH (FEC), a company of Funkwerk AG, supports its partners in the fight against spam by means of its new online tool provided on the FEC Web site. The Funkwerk UTM (Unified Threat Management) Spam Outbreak Monitor enables users to monitor the spreading of spam e-mails online and in real-time. Spam Outbreak Monitor is based on the RPD Commtouch Engine, which is also used in the optional spam filter of the Funkwerk UTM systems. With its UTM systems, FEC comprehensively supports its customers to protect their networks against threats coming from the Internet.
As a rule, spam filters only evaluate e-mails heuristically in terms of their contents. The Commtouch Engine in the Funkwerk UTM systems additionally checks the frequency of occurrence and the manner of propagation of an e-mail. For this purpose, the "Recurrent Pattern Detection Engine" monitors the e-mail traffic in the Internet worldwide and creates an unambiguous fingerprint of each e-mail found. By comparing the fingerprints, it is determined in real-time how frequently an e-mail occurs and how it was propagated. If many mail servers, for instance, send the e-mail to many recipients, this is a clear hint to spamming. The spam detection rate of this technology is exceptionally high, since the detection of spam e-mails is performed independent of the language, contents, and sender. Spam texts embedded in images will, thus, also be clearly identified as spam. In practice, it is not possible to mistake desired business e-mails for spam e-mails, since business e-mails are not propagated in mass and are not sent in parallel from several mail serves.
In the context of a special offer valid until June 30, 2008, each Funkwerk UTM system type 1100 and 1500 can be equipped with the RPD technology free of charge for the duration of one year.
The Funkwerk UTM Spam Outbreak Monitor graphically captures the worldwide propagation of spam.
