The Tirol Transportation Authority (Verkehrsverbund Tirol GesmbH (VTG)) recently placed a contract with Funkwerk Information Technologies GmbH (Funkwerk IT) for delivery of a “central data pool” to distribute timetable data within a dynamic passenger information system for all public transport services throughout the Tirol region. In preparation for the expected increase in passenger volume during the European Football Championship 2008 in Austria, VTG’s project, entitled “System for dynamic passenger information in the VTG”, incorporates Funkwerk IT’s product RIMOS as the central element within the overall system.
With the central data pool RIMOS VTG can now provide passengers with information via Internet as well as local dynamic passenger information displays on the current situation in the public transport system on the basis of real-time data. Implementation of the first phase of the project and its successful commissioning took only a few months. The first new digital passenger information displays were installed in the regional bus terminal at the main station in time for Euro 2008. At each bus stop the displays show information about the next departures from that stop. In addition, up-to-date information in text form can be displayed about special services or timetable alterations in the event of unexpected incidents. Currently RIMOS gives information about the arrival of the next bus based on scheduled data, but in future after Euro 2008 the system will process real-time data for this task. The Tirol Transportation Authority would also like to provide a central data pool for all the different transport companies operating in Tirol through which these companies can exchange and supply data for passenger information in the future.
The central data pool RIMOS connects and distributes information for all transport modes in the region, e.g. rail, bus and tram. With RIMOS, passenger information beyond system boundaries becomes reality. The estimated departure times of the services of one company or mode are supplied, discrimination-free, to the systems of other companies or modes. With its open interfaces the RIMOS system enables easy integration of any already existing system on the basis of the recognised, widely used VDV/SIRI standard. The integration of RIMOS into the system environment of the Tirol Transportation Authority proceeded without problem as all interfaces comply with the requirements of the VDV documents 452, 453 and 454.
Funkwerk IT’s RIMOS System has been in successful operation for a number of transport associations in Germany. Besides reducing administration, RIMOS has also produced a marked improvement in service with regard to passenger information and guaranteed connection services in these public transport regions.
